Lesson 1: Parents
After completing Lesson 1, you will be able to:
- explain the importance of parental involvement in child care and its benefits for children;
- discuss the meaning of the teacher-parent relationship as a partnership;
- indicate the teacher’s role in establishing a partner relationship and empowering parents;
- identify ways to create a classroom community that includes all families’ cultural backgrounds, overcomes language barriers, and recognizes parents’ adult learning styles.
Lesson 2: In the Beginning: The Foundations
After completing Lesson 2, you will be able to:
- list factors that contribute to parent’s favorable first impressions when they are searching for a child care program;
- discuss the importance of the orientation process;
- explain the significance of parent collaboration in creating policies;
- list important items to be included in your child care program’s policy statement;
- describe ways to build a trusting relationship with parents and children who experience separation anxiety.
Lesson 3: Building the Relationship
After completing Lesson 3, you will be able to:
- discuss the importance of effective communication with parents;
- list ways you can achieve two-way communication;
- recognize approaches that maintain harmony between parents and teachers;
- indicate strategies for effective communication with parents, including adjusting to diverse communication styles and situations.
Lesson 4: Ways to Involve Parents
After completing Lesson 4, you will be able to:
- outline a plan for initiating parent participation in parent-child activities;
- discuss using an interactive website to maintain contact and invite collaboration with parents;
- describe how to conduct frequent teacher-parent conferences that encourage parents’ participation in their child’s care and education;
- explain the value of home visits and group meetings in encouraging parent involvement.
