Lesson 1: Managing Finances

After completing Lesson 1, you will be able to:

  • describe components of business and marketing plans;
  • identify funding sources, including childcare subsidies and the food program
  • explain how to create and balance a budget;
  • identify record keeping resources and the function of financial statements;
  • describe break-even analysis steps and how to use them to make enrollment decisions aligned with the affordability of childcare and tuition trends.

Lesson 2: Hiring and Supervising Qualified Staff

After completing Lesson 2, you will be able to:

  • describe how to conduct effective interviews and hire qualified staff;
  • recognize hiring decisions that are aligned with regulations and staffing needs;
  • discuss employment agreements, staff orientation requirements, personnel policies, and employee benefits;
  • describe types of supervision, performance evaluation tools and staff retention strategies.

Lesson 3: Staff Development and Motivation

After completing Lesson 3, you will be able to:

  • recognize characteristics of teachers as learners;
  • identify professional development strategies, including coaching, creating plans, and selecting providers;
  • discuss strategies to improve program quality and fulfill MSDE Child Care Credential, Tier Reimbursement, Career and Professional Development Fund, and accreditation requirements.
  • describe ways to reduce stress and job burnout and increase motivation.

Lesson 4: Communicating with Staff

After completing Lesson 4, you will be able to:

  • identify information that should be regularly communicated to staff, how to communicate effectively, and common communication issues;
  • recognize components of respectful professional relationships with staff.

Lesson 5: Communicating With Families and the Community

After completing Lesson 5, you will be able to:

  • identify information that should be regularly communicated to parents;
  • recognize components of respective professional relationships with parents;
  • describe how to communicate effectively with the community.

Lesson 6: Curriculum and Learning

After completing Lesson 6, you will be able to:

  • identify developmentally appropriate practices and curriculum;
  • explain how children learn;
  • describe ways to best support children as they transition into a program, move within a program, and leave a program.

Lesson 7: Effective Curriculum

After completing Lesson 7, you will be able to:

  • identify strategies for selecting developmentally appropriate curriculum;

become familiar with the content of the

  • Maryland Model for School Readiness,
  • Maryland Preschool Curriculum,
  • State approved curricula.

Lesson 8: Observation and Assessment

After completing Lesson 8, you will be able to:

  • identify observation and assessment tools;
  • demonstrate an understanding of how to assess and meet the needs of children with special needs and support their parents.

Lesson 9: Learning Spaces

After completing Lesson 9, you will be able to:

  • identify strategies for setting up permanent and shared space environments that meet the needs of children and align with regulations;
  • recognize developmentally appropriate materials and ways to create learning spaces that support curriculum and promote children’s development.

Lesson 10: Safe Spaces

After completing Lesson 10, you will be able to:

  • explain the importance of supervision and staff/child ratios for children’s safety;
  • identify the characteristics of safe indoor and outdoor spaces for children;
  • identify guidelines for handling accidents and injuries.

Lesson 11: Adverse Childhood Experiences

After completing Lesson 11, you will be able to:

  • describe adverse childhood experiences and their long-term consequences;
  • discuss signs, types, reasons, and results of child abuse and neglect;
  • identify child abuse and neglect reporting procedures;
  • describe strategies for supporting children who are abused and neglected;
  • identify strategies and referral resources teachers can use to support families facing challenges.
